When Your Upper Eyelids are Drooping and You’re Ready for a Change

Our Team

3/11/2019

Drooping upper eyelids are common among men and women who have reached a certain age. There are also people who are genetically predisposed to developing them early in life. However, the issue is that in most cases, drooping eyelids do nothing good for your aesthetic appearance. They make you look dull and tired, while adding years to your face. In addition, it can interfere with your vision.

You may have used a number of anti-aging creams in the past that have yielded no results – again, a common experience shared by many. However, with blepharoplasty, you no longer have to live every day looking dull, tired, and older than you actually are. In other words, blepharoplasty is the change you’ve been looking for.

How Does Blepharoplasty Work? What Is The Procedure Like?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure where excess skin and fat on the upper or lower eyelids, are removed from the eye region. As a result, you will see significant improvement in the appearance of the eyes, making them look brighter and more alert. Additionally, any vision problem which may have been caused such as the reduction of peripheral vision, is also corrected in the process.

Often, drooping eyelids is accompanied by other signs of aging around the eyes, which eyelid surgery can also help correct. These may include:

  • Lines and wrinkles around your eyes
  • Bags under your eyes (fat deposits) and puffy-looking eyes
  • Poor peripheral vision

What Are The Procedure And Recovery Like?

Blepharoplasty for the upper eyelids is an outpatient procedure, which means that you do not have to stay overnight in the hospital after your surgery. However, this doesn’t mean that it is a simple procedure.

Rather, the procedure for blepharoplasty, whether for upper eyelid, lower eyelid or both, is quite complex. It is essential that you only seek help from a doctor that is board-certified and has plenty of experience.

First, your surgeon will administer either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. After this, they will make an incision on your upper eyelids to gain access to the underlying tissues. The incision will be strategically placed to limit the visibility of post-surgical marks as you heal.

It is through these incisions that any excess fat, tissue, and skin will be removed. These incisions also provide the surgeon access to the underlying muscles so that can be tightened and give your eyes a more youthful and alert appearance.

Once the necessary corrections are made, your doctor will close the incisions and bandaged the treatment area. During your recovery period, it is normal to experience some swelling and to bruise for about two weeks after which your eyelids will transition to a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate?

If you identify with the following, you may be an ideal candidate for blepharoplasty:

  • You have droopy upper eyelids caused as a result of loose skin
  • You have bags under your eyes
  • You have lines and wrinkles around your eyes
  • You are above the age of 18
  • You have realistic expectations from the procedure
