Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is designed for women who experience medical problems due to overly large breasts. Problems may include back and neck pain, skin irritation, skeletal deformities, and breathing problems. Although the procedure is typically used to alleviate medical problems, it can also help women who feel self-conscious about the size of their breasts.
What Is Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction is a surgical procedure that ideally should be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon. This procedure is performed to remove extra fat, glandular breast tissue, and/or skin from the breasts.
Disproportionate breasts can cause physical discomfort and emotional distress for patients. This surgical treatment can reduce your breast size to make it appropriate for your body type or specific needs.
Ideal Candidates for Breast Reduction Surgery
If the weight or shape of your breasts limits your physical activities, then you can be a good candidate for a breast reduction procedure. Skin irritations under the breast fold or bra strap indentations on your shoulders are also signs that you may need to undergo reduction mammoplasty.
Before you undergo breast reduction, you must be in good physical condition. It is also important that you are a non-smoker. If you smoke, you must be committed to stopping weeks before your surgery.
Your Consultation
Your initial consultation at Plastic Surgery Institute of Dayton will include a physical examination of your breast region. Your plastic surgeon will evaluate the size and shape of your breasts, as well as your skin elasticity. The locations of your nipples will also be noted. Measurements and photographs may be taken for documentation.
An in-depth discussion of your medical history will also take place. You will be asked about whether you have a history of breast cancer in your family. Let your surgeon know about any underlying allergies, underlying conditions, and current medications.
The Breast Reduction Procedure
The treatment approach utilized will depend on your desired outcome. You may be given general anesthesia, depending on your surgeon’s recommendation.
Your surgeon might use liposuction to remove the excess fat from your breast. This is best for small-scale reductions and for patients with good skin elasticity.
For large reductions, incisions will be created around your areola. They may stretch down to the crease of your breast and possibly horizontally across the crease in a curve.
Glandular breast tissue, fat, and/or excess skin will be removed to reduce size and give your breasts improved lift and shape. Surgical stitches will be used to close the incisions. The whole procedure can take 2 to 5 hours to complete.
Breast Reduction Recovery
After your breast reduction surgery, you will need a few days to a few weeks of downtime for recovery and healing. Surgical bras or compression garments will be recommended for you to wear. You may experience breast pain, bruising, and swelling for the next couple of days. Oral painkillers may be prescribed to help alleviate discomfort.
You will need to slow things down and avoid strenuous physical activities for about a month to aid in faster healing. No heavy lifting must be done. You will also be scheduled for follow-up checks.
Breast Reduction Cost
Since breast reduction surgery is tailored depending on the patient’s needs, the cost varies as well. The total price of your procedure may include the anesthetic used, complexity of the surgery, and other miscellaneous expenses.
