At Plastic Surgery Institute of Dayton, Inc. in Centerville, OH, breast resensation is an advanced microsurgical technique that gives women the potential to regain feeling in their chest following a mastectomy. During most mastectomy procedures, the nerves that supply sensation to the breast and nipple area are severed, often leaving behind permanent numbness. While traditional breast reconstruction can rebuild the shape and appearance of the breast, it does not typically restore sensation. The Resensation® technique goes a step further by aiming to reconnect nerves in the chest with the reconstructed breast tissue, opening the door to sensory recovery over time. This innovative approach can be a meaningful part of the healing process, helping patients feel more complete both physically and emotionally.
What is Resensation?
How Does Breast Resensation Work?
Breast resensation is performed during or after your mastectomy and reconstruction. During surgery, your surgeon works to rejoin the chest wall nerves and the tissue used to reconstruct the breast. This is accomplished using nerve grafts—donor tissue designed to guide nerve regrowth. As healing occurs, the body may begin to regenerate these nerves and reestablish pathways that allow sensation to return to the skin and soft tissue of the breast. While the return of feeling varies from patient to patient, this technique introduces the possibility of meaningful sensory recovery that was once thought impossible.
What Are the Benefits of Breast Resensation?
Adding breast resensation to a reconstruction plan can offer several long-term advantages for Centerville, OH patients, both physically and emotionally:
- Improved sensory awareness – May help restore the ability to feel touch, warmth, or pressure in the breast area
- Greater sense of body connection – Helps patients feel more “in touch” with their body after surgery
- Better emotional recovery – Supports a deeper level of healing following a mastectomy
- Flexible timing – Can be performed during initial reconstruction or added later if appropriate
Plastic Surgery Institute of Dayton, Inc. Reviews
Good people very caring , I don’t have family here in Ohio so having a staff that cares means a lot to this southern gal !
Dr. Hedrick carefully closed a fairly large hole left by removal of a deep melanoma removed from mom's temple by another excellent surgeon, Dr. Tuttle from Kettering oncology. Very happy with his work at only the third day following surgery. Minimal drainage, almost no swelling, and very light, almost unnoticeable bruising. 0 pain unless I press to hard in cleaning as directed. Far better than I was expecting. Personally, I find him very personable with a good sense of humor that is appropriately applied in timely fashion. He thoughtfully explains each step and thoroughly answers any questions. I can't imagine what else we could expect beyond what he has provided. Thank you!
Amazing group.
Dr. Hedrick was great! He got me into the office quickly, took the time to explain everything and alleviated all my concerns about the size of the scar needed to remove my skin cancer.
I love Dr Fox and everyone at this office!
